Shin-Etsu Challengers
I want to contribute to not only export shipment management but also formulating optimal production plans
K.T.
Shin-Etsu Silicones (Thailand)
After working for a foreign-owned IT company in Japan for four years starting in 2017, returned to Thailand in 2021 and joined Shin-Etsu Silicones (Thailand) Ltd. Now responsible for silicone export shipment management, utilizing experience cultivated in the previous job.
Japanese companies have a culture of developing talent
My motivation for joining Shin-Etsu Silicones (Thailand) Ltd. (SEST) was the reputation of Japanese companies for being very serious about education and training. I previously worked in Japan, and although it was a foreign-owned company, I got the sense from the Japanese people I interacted with that the culture of Japanese companies was to take the time to develop employees. I felt that even after returning to Thailand, I would be able to build on the knowledge I had accumulated and further develop my skills at a Group company of Shin-Etsu Chemical, which is a Japanese company.
However, I joined SEST in late 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was hard to acclimate to a new work environment when it was difficult for all employees to come to the office at the same time and there weren't many opportunities to communicate with the people around. However, through web meetings and phone calls, I was given the explanation on the job content and my questions were answered patiently, and little by little I was able to complete my work.
Acquiring know-how to increase customer satisfaction
Now, with a detailed understanding of global shipping routes and ocean freight rates, I am able to respond appropriately even when supply chains are disrupted. Furthermore, I’ve become familiar with customs clearance rules and free trade agreement (FTA) mechanisms, and I'm able to make proposals that benefit our customers. For example, the Suez Canal is usually used for transportation from Asia to Europe or America, but currently political risks have made it unusable*. Therefore, we have no choice but to choose the Cape of Good Hope route, even if it means an additional lead time of about 10 days. We share this kind of information with our customers as early as possible, and try to minimize the impact on them, for example by moving up the delivery of products that have not yet been shipped.

In-depth market and customer knowledge also supports sales
That said, SEST ships to customers in a variety of industries all over the world, and in the course of our daily work, we don’t always fully understand the customers to whom we ship and their applications. Still, we can prepare for changes in demand by learning more about the demand trends in the markets we ship to and the nature of our customers' business. This will enable us to further improve the accuracy of our production plans at the Thai plant, manufacture what we need to sell in advance, and create an optimal shipping balance.
Therefore, my current challenge is not only to manage shipments, but also to support sales activities to appropriately increase shipment volume. To achieve this, I am striving to understand the market and our customers' businesses, while also acquiring product knowledge and studying what products the Shin-Etsu Group can offer to our customers.
