The Shin-Etsu Group began early in seeking active places in the world for conducting business.
For many years, many of its products, especially PVC and its other main products, have been produced and sold abroad at our overseas bases.
The Shin-Etsu Group has excelled by following a strategy of selecting "the most suitable location" in its overseas development.
Our idea of the "most suitable location" is not simply the most cost-competitive place.
We consider the growth potential in market scale and also the possibility of disasters or uncontrollable circumstances, and get a gut feeling of the market needs.
We also demand the ability to adapt to circumstances accurately and swiftly when we are developing bases.
By following these basic guidelines, the Shin-Etsu Group is meeting the needs of its customers all over the world.

It was the PVC business that gave the Shin-Etsu Group its start in globalizing its business structure. In 1960, we founded CIRES, S.A. in Portugal. This was the first time for a Japanese chemical company to set up a PVC production base overseas. Then in 1973, we set up Shintech Inc. in the U.S., getting a start in the world's largest market for PVC. In 1999, construction work began on Shintech's second plant, and Shin-Etsu PVC B.V. was established in the Netherlands after Shin-Etsu acquired a company there. Thus the Shin-Etsu Group has gone forward with a tripolar system for developing major production bases in the world's three principal markets for PVC. As a result, the total production capacity of the Shin-Etsu Group has become the world's largest, with its current yearly production capacity of 3.5 million tons.

Semiconductor silicon is in demand from manufacturers of electronic devices as substrates for integrated circuits. In order to meet this, it is necessary to establish a stable supply system through high technology in single crystal growing, processing and quality control. Currently, Shin-Etsu Handotai has established local subsidiary companies in the United States, Malaysia, U.K. and Taiwan, which produce high-quality semiconductor silicon. It is fulfilling its responsibilities as the world's largest producer and supplier of these.

The Shin-Etsu Group is promoting business development combining silicon-related items, including silicone, semiconductor silicon and synthetic quartz, into one nucleus. This would ensure a stable supply of raw materials, so it has added Simcoa Operations of Australia to the group and building a complete production system from raw materials through to finished products. It is thereby building more trust with its customers.
