Shin-Etsu announces domestic PVC price increase
Surging materials costs necessitate the step (2002.5.8)
Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Tokyo, President: Chihiro Kanagawa) has announced that effective from June 1 the domestic sales price of PVC will be increased by more than 20 yen/kg.
This price revision will become effective for PVC supplied from June 1, 2002, and negotiations will start with customers as soon as possible.
Domestic demand for PVC has seen a steep decline due to stagnant housing construction and restraints on public investment. On the other hand, from the beginning of the year, while global demand for caustic soda is hovering at low levels, the price of chlorine rose and the price of the intermediate material EDC continued to soar. Furthermore, the price of naphtha has risen greatly. These business circumstances characterized by increased PVC production costs combined with a drop in PVC sales has necessitated this price revision in order to continue a healthy state for the PVC business and to maintain steady supply of PVC to Shin-Etsu's customers.
The soaring of the cost of basic materials for producing PVC is a worldwide phenomenon. The price of PVC has been increasing in Southeast Asia, as well as the U.S. and Europe.
